May Sketchbook: Expressive Drawings

Following on from a busy month with lots of new illustrations, commissions and art print sales, I wanted to publish a new blog post today and showcase my May sketchbook.

I’m constantly practicing my craft and have the motivation to keep improving my illustrations, and I always try and sketch at least once a day. This can be any topic that inspires me on that day, which I usually produce with colouring pencil – so I can also practice my colour at the same time! This keeps my eye in check, so if I unexpectedly receive a commission through the door – I’m ready for it!

I find the topic of portraits and landscapes crop up in my sketchbook a lot, which is also evident in my previous sketchbook update last month, as it interests me so much! People are all around us, and we like recognising portraits. I really enjoy trying to capture someone’s personality or trait in one single image.

Moving Towards Expressive Drawings

Within this sketchbook update I’m showcasing some very expressive drawings, as I love getting into a drawing, and producing lots of marks.

My paintings don’t tend to be like this, as they are more controlled and simple in design, which gives me the opportunity to be expressive within my sketchbook. All of these expressive drawings are personal, and aren’t for any commission.

Personal drawings are so important for me as they are solely for me and no one else. I can do exactly what I wish, and experiment with techniques to find a new way of working. This is somewhat impossible with commissioned illustrations, as a client wants a particular style or wants to know what to expect.

I hope you like this blog post showcasing my May sketchbook drawings, let me know what you think my commenting below, I’ll love to hear from you! If you’re new to my illustrations, do check out my illustration portfolio, which features more of my art!

Enjoy these expressive drawings!

Many thanks for listening and visiting my news page today. You can follow what I’m up to on my Twitter, Facebook or Google + pages, I’ll really appreciate it if you do, and don’t be afraid to say hi to me! Many thanks again, and have a great day!
