Alongside my website undergoing some re-design at the moment (my homepage and portfolio pages), which I’ll show you guys as soon as it’s ready for release, I thought I would produce a book cover illustration of the book ‘The Hunt’, by Andrew Fukuda. Even though I was sceptical before reading the book, I was surprised about how much I got into it, as at first I thought it was going to be cheesy and not really my type of reading, but it turned out to be an interesting read!
The whole book is about the human extinction of vampires, and how one boy lives amongst fear of being found out that he’s actually a human, living amongst these vampires. Like ‘The Hunger Games’, every year there’s an annual ‘Hunt’, which selects a few lucky vampires to devour some humans on a televised hunt.
I won’t give too much away about the plot, but my book cover reflects the boy’s loneliness throughout the book, and is protected by the light around him, as these vampires die when in contact with light. I’ve tried to express these ‘creatures’ subtly amongst the darkness of the book cover, who are all ready to pounce on the individual in the centre.
I really enjoyed producing this book cover as it allowed to to think of various ideas and concepts, and was an interesting theme which I haven’t really illustrated before. I’ve also included some close up shots of the cover too.
I’ll keep you updated about my website’s re-design!
