Alongside the quite busy week I’ve had, working on other various illustration commissions, I was asked to produce an illustration for ‘Out West’ Quarterly Publication. Out West is a quarterly publication dedicated to showcasing the finest, choicest new writing and illustration in the south-west. I was asked to produce an illustration to support the poem within the publication, ‘Cover me in Chocolate’, which is a really funny poem by Daniel Haynes.
The character of the poem decides to cover their whole body in chocolate, and feed themselves to the lesbians. He goes to his local store to buy a ton of chocolate and goes to Brighton to seek the lesbians out. It was a hilarious poem which threw up a lot of ideas and possible compositions!
With my illustration, I wanted to focus on the moment when the character of the poem puts the chocolate all over their body (without actually seeing the character in the illustration). This was because I wanted the audience to use some of their imagination to paint this picture in their head’s. After my initial rough’s, me and the client thought that the landscape image was the most effective, (number #1 in the rough image below). This showcases the Brighton landscape in the background, with a trail of chocolate footprints in the foreground, leading away from the pile.
I really enjoyed producing this illustration, and it was a great poem to work towards. I hope you like it, and be sure to check some of Out West’s publications when it gets printed! I’ll keep you guys updated when you can buy it!
