As an illustrator for hire, an Art Director in New York once said to me, “I want you to be the Map Man” whilst she was looking through my portfolio, so I decided to create this new illustration, of a map!
As my way of working fits quite well into maps and that of infographics, and because I really enjoy producing them, I decided to produce an illustrated map of Paris. Showcasing the main things to see in the city, this illustration is basically a tourist map. As I’m an illustrator for hire, I thought this would make a good art print addition to my Shop.
From my research into the city, and from the many films I have watched which are based in Paris, it seems like a great place to go and visit, as I’ve never actually been to the French capital.
Working from my sketchbook thumbnails, which is shown below, I wanted to show the famous landmarks of the city, including that of the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Louvre, Luxembourg Palace, Les Invalides and the Notre Dame. I wanted there to be an aspect of roads as well within the map, as I think it was important to show this. The painting is done with gouache and water colour which is scanned into Photoshop.
