Hey guys! How’s it all going? I have been quite busy recently with lots of different commissions, from a book cover design for a Hampshire based author, to this new family drawing commission I’m showing you today!
If you don’t know much about this new book cover illustration, do head over to my portfolio to find out more. It involves some spooky looking characters including a raven (what not to like?).
Anyway back to this family drawing commission, I was asked by a local client in Hampshire to produce an A2 drawing as a birthday gift for their Mother’s 70th birthday. I’ve not actually drawn anything that big before, as my largest drawing was for an office wall that was drawn in A3 and blown up to A1.
The client asked me to compose her family into one image, which is easier said than done I ensure you! Including grandparents, cousins, to Mums and Dads.
Working with lots of images of the different family members, I firstly cut the images digitally to show the client what the final artwork would look like.
This involves cutting each image in Adobe Photoshop and then arranging them in Adobe Indesign, which takes a bit of time! This was a crucial part of the process, as I knew exactly what the final image would look like.
I worked closely with the client at this stage, with lots of different versions going back and forth (which I enjoy as it makes a better image). Making all the figures appear the same size was the hardest part of this process, as all of the images had various widths and heights, but we got there in the end.
Drawing directly onto A2, I mapped out and basically copied the digital composition (essentially cheating from my own work). This was a very smooth process, and ended up with the final A2 family drawing commission below.
I wanted the drawing to be centered around the grandparents in the middle, with their family around them. I’m really happy with how it turned out, and the client was happy too, so happy days!
I hope you enjoy this A2 family drawing commission, it was a very enjoyable project, and thanks to the client for the great commission!
